Enagás Launches Public Consultation for Murcia Hydrogen Backbone Network
Enagás has launched the public participation process for the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone Network in the Region of Murcia, marking the final stage of its nationwide consultation programme for the country’s planned renewable hydrogen infrastructure.
The launch was announced during a meeting attended by the President of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, Regional Minister for the Environment, Industry, Universities, Research and the Mar Menor Juan María Vázquez Rojas, Enagás Chief Executive Arturo Gonzalo and General Manager for Energy Transition Natalia Latorre.
The proposed hydrogen backbone will include 44 kilometres of dedicated hydrogen pipelines crossing six municipalities in the region: Cartagena, Murcia, San Javier, Torre-Pacheco, La Unión and Los Alcázares. The infrastructure forms part of the Montesa-Cartagena section of the Levante Axis and is expected to play a central role in the Mediterranean Arc’s green hydrogen corridor.
Enagás said the project will position the Escombreras Valley in Cartagena as a potential hydrogen aggregation hub, supporting future renewable hydrogen production and industrial consumption projects while strengthening the region’s role in Spain’s emerging hydrogen economy.
Most of the new hydrogen pipeline will be installed alongside the existing natural gas network, reducing environmental impacts and simplifying integration with existing energy infrastructure. The company believes the network will help attract new industrial investment while supporting regional economic development and the transition to low-carbon energy.
Chief Executive Arturo Gonzalo said the public participation process is another important step towards developing critical infrastructure for Spain’s energy transition. He added that Enagás aims to work closely with local authorities, businesses and residents to maximise the project’s economic, environmental and social benefits while supporting new industrial opportunities linked to renewable hydrogen.
The consultation period in the Region of Murcia will remain open until 3 July and includes public participation events in Cartagena and Murcia, alongside six information points located across the affected municipalities. Residents, organisations and public bodies will be able to review the project and submit feedback before the design progresses.
The Murcia consultation completes Enagás’ nationwide Public Participation Plan, which began in April 2025 and has presented the hydrogen backbone project across 13 autonomous communities. The initiative has covered more than 500 municipalities over an 18-month period, making it one of Spain’s largest infrastructure consultation programmes.
The planned Spanish Hydrogen Backbone Network comprises approximately 2,600 kilometres of hydrogen pipelines designed to support the transport of renewable hydrogen across the country. Enagás estimates that the development of Spain’s hydrogen economy could contribute more than €32 billion to national GDP while supporting around 81,000 jobs during the construction and rollout of the backbone network.
