EcoVadis Launches Carbon Data Reliability Framework to Tackle Corporate Emissions Reporting Trust Gap
EcoVadis has published the full methodology behind its Carbon Data Reliability Level™ (DRL) framework, calling for widespread industry adoption as a global standard to improve the accuracy and credibility of corporate carbon emissions reporting.
The global sustainability ratings provider said the new framework is designed to address what it describes as a growing “trust deficit” in Scope 3 emissions data, where companies increasingly rely on supplier-reported figures that often lack consistent verification or methodological transparency.
The DRL system is built on EcoVadis’ Carbon Data Network, which includes approximately 60,000 reporting organisations worldwide. It aims to convert raw emissions data into structured, assurance-aligned intelligence by assessing reliability through a three-stage validation process.
The first stage, referred to as the evidence gate, checks whether reported greenhouse gas (GHG) figures can be traced back to verifiable source documentation. Data without traceable evidence is automatically classified as low reliability.
The second stage evaluates methodological rigor, including alignment with recognised standards such as the GHG Protocol and the presence of third-party verification. The final stage assesses plausibility by comparing reported emissions data against sector benchmarks to identify statistical anomalies or inconsistencies.
Together, these stages produce a four-tier classification system: low, medium, high, and third-party verified or compliance-ready data. EcoVadis said the framework is designed to align with emerging regulatory regimes, including the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), California’s SB 253 legislation, and evolving global assurance standards.
Dexter Galvin, Senior Vice President for Climate at EcoVadis, said Scope 3 emissions remain the most significant but least reliable component of corporate carbon footprints. He said the DRL framework is intended to shift the focus from simple data collection towards verified data reliability, improving confidence in sustainability reporting and decision-making.
The company also positioned the system as a compliance tool that supports emerging international standards such as revisions to the GHG Protocol, CSRD reporting requirements under ESRS E1, and assurance frameworks like ISSA 5000.
EcoVadis said the strength of the system lies in the scale and depth of its underlying dataset, which enables sector-specific benchmarking and anomaly detection across global supply chains. It added that the reliability scores generated through DRL will be integrated into partner platforms, allowing consistent data quality assessments across multiple sustainability and procurement systems.
By embedding reliability scoring directly into emissions reporting workflows, EcoVadis said it aims to reduce uncertainty in corporate climate disclosures and support more consistent, verifiable Scope 3 accounting across industries.
