Context Labs enters multi-year agreement with Trafigura and acquires Kinertic to support carbon-informed commodities trading

Context Labs has entered into a multi-year agreement with Trafigura and acquired Kinertic, a carbon-intelligence platform developed by the commodities trading company, in a move aimed at bringing emissions data directly into commodity trading and operational decision-making.
The Amsterdam-based industrial AI infrastructure company announced three connected transactions with Trafigura on 12 August 2026: the acquisition of Agora (Europe) Limited, the Trafigura subsidiary that owns and operates Kinertic; a strategic equity investment by Trafigura in Context Labs; and a multi-year master services and platform licence agreement allowing Trafigura to deploy the combined platform across multiple commodity trading desks.
Kinertic provides commodity producers, traders and buyers with carbon intelligence integrated into existing systems. The platform connects with trade capture systems to map commodity flows, aggregate portfolios and generate regulatory and customer reports.
By integrating Kinertic with Context Labs’ AI and data infrastructure, traders will be able to view price, volume, logistics and carbon metrics within a single environment.
Context Labs said the combination is designed to help companies manage carbon data across the commodity value chain, from production and transportation through to end markets.
The development comes as carbon requirements become increasingly relevant to international commodity markets. The EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is now entering its definitive phase, while the EU Methane Regulation is moving towards increased monitoring and verification requirements.
Context Labs said verified, trade-specific carbon data is increasingly becoming relevant to procurement and trading decisions rather than being treated solely as a reporting requirement.
Dan Harple, Founder and CEO of Context Labs, said: “The opportunity isn’t in generating more data, it’s in bringing context to the data our customers already have.”
He added that integrating Kinertic with Context Labs’ AI and data infrastructure would turn fragmented information into connected and verifiable data that can be traced to its source and used to inform pricing, risk management and capital allocation.
Hannah Hauman, Global Head of Carbon Trading at Trafigura, said: “Carbon is now a core dimension of market risk and opportunity. Our traders need the same level of accuracy on emissions that they have on price and logistics.”
The combined platform is designed to provide commodity producers, traders, financiers and buyers with carbon-informed portfolio analytics, trade-flow analysis and reporting covering carbon and methane intensity across commodity value chains.
The system will also connect Internet of Things (IoT), operational, third-party and certification data into a common emissions and attributes layer, providing what the companies describe as an AI-ready and provenance-rich data infrastructure.
The platform is intended to support regulatory and reporting requirements including the EU Methane Regulation and CBAM, as well as end-to-end product carbon footprint reporting.
Pelle Sommansson, CEO and Co-founder of Kinertic, said the combination would help move carbon from a reporting exercise towards becoming a core market signal, with carbon intensity becoming a measurable attribute in the way energy and other commodities are valued and traded.
Under the agreement, Trafigura will be able to deploy the combined Context Labs-Kinertic platform across multiple commodity trading desks, while its strategic investment will support continued development and integration of Kinertic’s capabilities.
