A6IP Center Advances Article 6 Carbon Market Discussions at AZEC International Conference
The Paris Agreement Article 6 Implementation Partnership (A6IP) Center has supported discussions on the development of high-integrity carbon markets and practical Article 6 implementation during the 5th Asia Zero Emission Community International Conference to Develop Carbon Markets (AZEC-DCM), held in Hiroshima, Japan, on 15 July 2026.
The conference, organized by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), brought together representatives from AZEC partner countries, international institutions and private-sector organizations to exchange views on strengthening carbon market frameworks and accelerating climate investment across the region.
As part of the event, the A6IP Center moderated two thematic sessions focused on the practical application of carbon credit methodologies and the development of domestic frameworks to support Article 6 activities.
The first session, titled “Practical Application of Carbon Credit Methodology and Leading Examples in Line with Article 6,” was jointly led by the A6IP Center and MOEJ. Discussions focused on real-world experiences from ongoing carbon market initiatives, including lessons learned from developing and applying carbon credit methodologies.
Participants highlighted the importance of robust methodologies, transparency and environmental integrity as essential foundations for building credible international carbon markets. The session explored how effective crediting approaches can support emissions reduction projects while maintaining confidence among governments, investors and market participants.
The second session, titled “Domestic Frameworks under Article 6 to Incentivize Foreign Investment,” examined how national policies, regulations and institutional structures can encourage private-sector participation in Article 6 activities.
Participants discussed approaches for creating enabling environments that attract investment while ensuring alignment with national climate targets and sustainable development priorities. The session emphasized the role of clear governance frameworks and cooperation between governments and businesses in scaling climate finance.
The discussions reinforced the importance of regional collaboration as countries move from preparation toward implementation of Article 6 mechanisms under the Paris Agreement.
By bringing together policymakers, technical experts, international partners and private-sector stakeholders, the AZEC conference provided a platform to share practical experiences and identify opportunities to mobilize investment for emissions reduction projects across Asia.
The A6IP Center continues to support the implementation of Article 6 by facilitating knowledge exchange, strengthening cooperation among stakeholders and contributing to the development of transparent and high-integrity carbon markets throughout the AZEC region.
